Colorado destination weddings have become (but let’s be honest, have ALWAYS been) popular across all demographics. I’ve been a Colorado wedding photographer for about 5 years now, moving my business from California. One thing I’ve noticed is how many out-of-staters come to Colorful Colorado to get married. All different sorts of weddings too- elopements, micro weddings, even over the top luxury weddings! And why wouldn’t they? This state is known for it’s beauty, culture, and FUN. Why Colorado has become a major wedding destination location;

1. Location Location Location! Literally. Colorado is located in the center of the country. For those couples who have friends and family spread across all 50 states, it sometimes makes sense to make it “fair” to everyone, and have a centralized location to meet up. The DIA is such a central hub for many major airlines, including a great connector between the smaller ski towns within Colorado such as Aspen and Vail. Not only is the location centrally located, but the location in *picturesque*. The Rocky Mountains are a sight to see. With snow tipped peaks and high desert vibes, Colorado has some of the most photographed mountains in the country. I have a whole list of wedding venues with the best views.
2. Activities! There is SO much to do when visiting this state! Guests can add a few extra days to their wedding weekend and depending on the time of year, dabble in some of the unique experiences Colorado has to offer. Whether skiing, sledding, or snowshoeing in the winter, or hiking, backpacking, brewery hopping, or fly fishing in the summer, this state has something to do for everyone.
3. Year round venue options. No matter the time of year, Colorado will have a certain charm that you’re looking for. Winter weddings in Colorado are like no other. Some ski town mountains specialize in winter weddings! With hot tubs and hot chocolate waiting for the guests upon arrival.
4. You can honeymoon in Colorado after your wedding. Why let the fun stop at just the wedding weekend? Extend your stay and explore some of the mountain towns like Ouray, wine country in Palisade, or go adventuring and white water rafting in the San Juans!

Popular Colorado destination cities for weddings;

I’ve photographed weddings ALL over this state, but there seem to be a few cities and towns that are a little more popular for destination weddings. Reasons for this being their popularity, ease of transportation/access, or beauty.

• Aspen. Some popular venues here would be The Little Nell, Hotel Jerome, and Aspen Meadows Resort.
• Vail. Host your ceremony on top of the ski mountain, and then bring the party on down to one of the luxury resorts.
• Telluride. People like to get married at San Sophia Overlook and Gorrono Ranch.
• Breckenridge. Check out Ten Mile Station!
• Winter Park. We love Devil’s Thumb Ranch and Lunch Rock.
• Denver. The Denver Botanic Gardens shouldn’t be overlooked!

Eloping in Colorado;

One of the more popular wedding trends for out-of-towners getting married in Colorado would be eloping. With one of the obvious reasons being the insane landscapes to choose from for a picturesque background for photos, but another important reasoning is that you can self solemnize your wedding! This means you do not need an officiant to oversee the nuptials. Even without a witness, you can legally get married! Colorado has one of the most relaxed wedding laws. They even allow your dog to be your legal “witness” if you’d like, or you can just put your own names down.
